An atrocity in Kenya: Could things get worse? | The Economist

National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States NASA has said that the Earth had a near miss July 23, 2012 with a giant solar flare or Coronal Mass Ejection CME from the most powerful solar storm on the sun in over 150 years.
Daniel Baker from University of Colorado was quoted as saying “If it had hit, we would still be picking up the pieces,”
He added that Earth and its inhabitants were fortunate that the 2012 eruption occurred when it did and not a week earlier.
Scientists say that a direct CME hit would have the potential to eliminate communication networks, GPS, and electrical grids to cause widespread blackout.

Israel warns of possible Gaza ground operation as Hamas vows to defend itself

fresh developments

By Mick Krever, CNN

An Israeli ground operation into Gaza “might become necessary,” Israeli Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz told CNN’s Michael Holmes, in for Christiane Amanpour, on Tuesday.

On the same day, Hamas Foreign Policy Spokesman Osama Hamdan vowed that Palestinians would defend themselves against any “attacks.”

“If the Israelis continue their attacks, the Palestinian people will defend themselves. Not only Hamas – all the Palestinians,” Hamdan told Holmes.

“If Israel stops and there was a clear ceasefire, the Palestinians will deal with that. Without this, there is no chance for the Palestinians to live under the Israeli attack without acting against that attack.”

Steinitz, of course, echoed this point from the Israeli side, citing the rockets militants fire from Gaza into Israel.

“There is some crazy people on both sides, but the symmetry you are trying to depict is totally wrong,” Steinitz told Holmes.

The Power of Hands

Globe Drifting

‘Behold the hands, how they promise, conjure, appeal, menace, pray, supplicate, refuse, beckon, interrogate, admire, confess, cringe, instruct, command, mock and what not besides, with a variation and multiplication of variation which makes the tongue envious.’ ― Michel de Montaigne

What would become of a fingerless pianist? His ferocious fingers – once before dangling from their palms like fleshy diamonds – would lie still and silent beside their grief-stricken owner. What would Lady Macbeth be without her blood-covered markers of murder? With no hands to embody her conscience, her shady descent into guilty insanity could never have commenced. Oh and yet, how kind Captain Hook could have been, had he only saved his hand from the crocodile of time!

They are a harpist’s greatest treasure and a thief’s greatest downfall; they may give power to the weak, speech to the deaf and sight to the blind. For Mohammad Ali, one fist can seal a legacy; for Napoleon, one hand gesture can kill…

Scientist who discovered Ebola: ‘This is unprecedented’

This is a disaster waiting to happen and the sad part is that African governments are too lax in their approach to tackling the virus. Everyone including the media is in denial especially those without reported cases, saying “it hasn’t reached here”.

By Mick Krever, CNN

The scientist who discovered the Ebola virus said that a current outbreak of the deadly bug in West Africa, in which 467 people have died, is “unprecedented.”

“One, [this is] the first time in West Africa that we have such an outbreak,” Dr. Peter Piot told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. “Secondly, it is the first time that three countries are involved. And thirdly it’s the first time that we have outbreaks in capitals, in capital cities.”

Doctors Without Borders warns that the outbreak in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia is now “out of control.” The number of cases is still spiking since it was first observed around the beginning of this year.

“With this strain of Ebola, you’ve got like a ninety percent chance of dying. That’s spectacular by any standard – one of the most lethal viruses that exist.”

And the way victims die is far…
