Kenya police fires teargas

Police have fired tear gas in central Nairobi to disperse a crowd of anti-government demonstrators in the streets, a Reuters witness said, as others gathered peacefully for a mass rally called by the opposition at a nearby park.

“Uhuru must go” was chanted by the demonstrators who oppose President Uhuru Kenyatta and carried posters in support of Raila Odinga, prompting police to fire half-a-dozen tear gas canisters effectively dispersing the crowd.

The rally which was seen as peaceful,” had the authorities agitated because of the fear that it could ignite latent tension between supporters of Kenyatta and Odinga.
